SPANAWAY, Wash. — A man has been charged with murder after an innocent bystander was killed in a shooting at a Spanaway gas station in May, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) said on Friday.

Angelina Palmer was shot dead at a Spanaway gas station on May 26, according to the PCSD, when she was caught in the middle of an altercation between two people in the gas station parking lot.

The suspect, identified as Jerrmell Warren, is currently in custody on independent charges at the Pierce County Jail. Warren was charged with second-degree murder, three counts of first-degree assault and wrongful possession of a firearm.

PCSD said detectives were able to identify a suspect through the investigation and with the help of community tips. According to the PCSD, there are no other suspects in circulation.

According to the indictment, Warren was seen approaching a parked vehicle and arguing with another man in the driver’s seat. The man in the vehicle ended up spraying what a witness described as bear spray at Warren.

According to the documents, Warren was seen on surveillance video stumbling back, drawing a gun and firing a round at the vehicle. The witness told authorities he didn’t think Warren could see where he was shooting because his head was down.

Warren continued firing at the vehicle as it left the area and fired at least seven more shots, the documents said, one of which hit Palmer.

The indictment documents also show that Palmer was run over by an innocent vehicle trying to flee the area during the shooting.

When deputies arrived, they found Palmer with a gunshot wound and administered first aid to her.

Palmer, 39, later died in hospital, leaving behind nine children.

A coroner said Palmer died as a result of the shooting and that her run-over injuries were “completely survivable.”

Warren’s first court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
