French authorities say one person has died and dozens more have been rescued from a boat carrying migrants that began to sink while trying to cross the English Channel

LONDON — French authorities said one person was killed and dozens more were rescued from a boat carrying migrants that began sinking Saturday while trying to cross the English Channel.

About 50 people have been rescued and six are in serious condition, France’s Channel and North Sea maritime agency said.

Several British and French ships joined the search and rescue effort early in the morning after a patrol boat reported that a migrant boat was sinking off Sangatte.

One person airlifted to Calais hospital was later pronounced dead.

The Boulogne prosecutor’s office is investigating.
