1 person killed in house fire in Philadelphia’s Frankford section

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A man is dead after a fire broke out at a home on the 1900 block of Orthodox Street in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia.

The 911 call came in around 1:30 p.m.

When our crews got there, the Philadelphia Fire Department had the flames under control. Officials say it took them just three minutes to do it.

But smoke was still smoldering from the rubble, and firefighters would make a tragic discovery.

A man was found dead on the first floor.

Philadelphia Fire Captain Derek Bowmer said there was a major problem with the home’s smoke detectors.

“It’s currently being investigated but we haven’t found any at this time,” Bowmer said.

The victim was not identified, but another inmate inside made it out safely.

In light of the tragedy, Bowmer said he needed to remind everyone of the need for smoke alarms.

He adds that the city has nearly 40 fire-related deaths this year.

“We had a tough year. We have a fire problem in this town. We encourage people to call 311 and we encourage people to turn up smoke alarms,” Bowmer said.

He says it’s easy to outfit your home and all you have to do is call 311 again.

“Please, we ask everyone to ask for a smoke alarm. We have them and we will come out and install them,” the captain said.
