11 Artists and Activists on the State of Trans Rights Around the Globe

I remember, when I first started puberty, I Googled the family computer (secretly, of course) for “how to be a boy”. That’s why I came across Kael T. Block’s XX Boys photography project about transgender boys from all over the world. Some of them had scars on their bodies, like the ones I have now. Through this project, I know that I don’t have to put up with my life simply. Knowing that a transition was possible gave me the hope I needed to get through my youth. This is why visibility matters.

What are the most pressing problems facing transgender people in France?

I cannot pretend to provide a detailed analysis like some activists can. That said, I find there is discord between the progress on several fronts and the failure of the state and government agencies to protect transgender rights. It has the potential to represent a major issue in our future struggles, especially in a context that makes it difficult for public figures to take a stand in favor of the rights and lives of those who need it. transgender. Transgender people need access to citizenship, stable jobs and housing. They need public policies that address their precarious situations, often excluded from support networks — they should not be denied or labeled.

How did you celebrate Pride?

For me Pride Month is a month of remembrance, to thank our elders who fought and allowed us to be able to live somewhere other than a closet. However, I am honored to celebrate our identity 12 months a year and not just in June. Because let’s not forget that our lives as transgender people and all the implications of oppression exist every month of the year, I take this opportunity to salute the collectives and unions of the world. The association was active throughout the year.

On Pride day I was with my friends and it was really a special moment. We are in the midst of ourselves so we feel strong and secure, our weirdness was not a weakness that day, a sensitive spot that put us in danger. No, it’s a bit of a special day because we’re together and we take up space around being people celebrating the same thing. As if this space finally belonged to us.

Is there a particular organization that you think is doing important work right now?

Acceptess-T has been around for more than ten years and they contribute to promoting the social rights of transgender people while providing material support to the most vulnerable, largely through FAST [the acronym for le Fonds d’Aide Social Trans, which provides food, housing, and other assistance]. The organization also supports and helps the development of other newer organizations. XY Media is another interesting organization. It is France’s first audiovisual media company and fights against reactionary and false narratives around transgender people.
