15 Best Pillows for for Every Type of Sleeper in 2022

While most other pillows seem to surpass the outside design, Birch has clearly taken the time to get it right. The organic cotton cover has a luxurious, soft peach pink design, it feels wrong to put it on. Most importantly, the pillow is dense and super supportive, a bit on the firmer side. For our tester, it was easily the most comfortable pillow he tried. Because they’re made-to-order, you’ll have to wait a little longer for them to be delivered to you, but the increase in quality is definitely worth the delay.

Best Gel Pillow: Original Purple

Purple pillow.

Purple’s original pillow was a 10-pound, vented purple polyester sheet made up of small triangles. Its space-age design makes every other pillow look absolutely classic (though it looks like any other pillow when you put the pillowcase on). It evenly distributes the weight you put on it, never warping out of shape or needing to ruffle, and sleeps super cool thanks to built-in air holes everywhere. Talk about airflow! Not too hot here! It’s unlike any standard pillow — like a unicorn pillow a gel-activated foam pillow helps keep your head high with less sag. Sure, it’s an odd and heavy-looking, breathable purple polyester block—but again, most pillows are feather pillows. Is it weird that we still put damn bird parts in our pillows?

Best Customizable Pillow: Pluto

Technically, Pluto makes 35 pillows, but all of them are considered the The Pluto. Why? Why Pluto designs to your specifics. Visit their website, fill out a quiz and Pluto will be prepared to fulfill your needs using its algorithm. All factors are carefully considered, including loft, fill and stiffness. If you sleep in the heat, you can even buy a pillow specifically created to help you avoid waking up in a puddle of sweat on your own head. Don’t worry if Pluto doesn’t nail it the first time (they usually do) because you have a 110-day trial to make sure your sex life is just what you like.

Marlow is a sister brand to Brooklinen (which needs no introduction), except it makes only one thing: pillows. While other pillows typically offer some sort of adjustable cushion, Marlow can be customized in a unique way. You can compress or decompress part of it to make it harder or softer. It sounds too simple, but somehow it works perfectly. Aside from the zipper gimmick, the pillow is a winner. It’s packed with cooling memory foam and alternative materials, and has a mesh inner layer for added breathability support. One downside: Pillows aren’t machine washable, can only be washed in place, although we do appreciate the antibacterial cover that helps keep bacteria out.

One of the many reasons why we crowned Layla’s Kapok pillow as a top choice in our 2022 Home Awards is its Goldilocks combo set with high neck support yet still soft. Made with airy plant-based Kapok fibers and shredded memory foam, the pillow retains its shape without collapsing as quickly as a pillow made of cotton or wool. The cooling polyester/viscose material also ensures you stay cool all night long, and its stylish hexagonal design looks great when the pillowcase is out. We still like our top pick, the Coop, because it comes with an extra bag, and has an additional and supportive construction, for a slightly cheaper price. However, the Kapok pillow doesn’t fall too far if you want to give it a try.

Nest Bedding Breathable Pillow

Like the pillow from Coop Home, the Easy Breather is made of shredded foam material. If it feels a bit high, you can easily pull some out. That makes it a pretty good pillow for anyone, but especially good for side sleepers. Unlike the Coop Home pillow, or the cheaper customizable Xtreme Comforts bed pillow below, the Nest Bedding pillowcase is made of Tencel. Tencel is a eucalyptus-based fabric that tends to breathe slightly better than traditional cotton or bamboo fabrics, which may explain why the Easy Breather acts as a cooling pillow without are there any weird cooling gels that some companies try to sell. If you’re looking for a solid alternative to Coop, the Nest Bedding pillow is calling your name.

Leesa pillows are usually sold in sets when purchasing one of its mattresses, but you can buy them alone. It has a “medium” thickness – not too soft, not too hard, but eventually falls on the softer side of the spectrum. This is lovely if you want your head to sink into the pillow a bit more, but may not be the best fit if you’re oversleeping in a serious case of tech neck.

DreamCloud memory foam pillow

Memory foam pillows are probably best for side sleepers, thanks to their supportive density. Usually, these pillows lack a loft. This is not a problem for DreamCloud pillows, it is extremely special. It’s the perfect pillow for someone with Michael Phelps’ shoulders. If you don’t have broad shoulders, your head may end up in the middle of the bottom of the pillow, which can be bad for your neck. But if you’re right, its foam padding provides a cooling outer shell that makes it a great alternative to the Coop Home Goods pillow.

Parachute’s pillow has a chic plush feel thanks to its soft satin cotton cover, but we found that it doesn’t have the full support of the Brooklinen trio above. Our testers felt that it lacked a bit of price-satisfaction, although it’s your thing (less lofty, you know!), go shopping.

Leesa’s hybrid pillow is an oddball. It’s adjustable, like Coop Home’s merchandise, but it’s not symmetrical. One smooth side. The other side is quilted with twelve protrusions, like microfiber pillows above the knee. This is great for people who frequently flip their pillows, looking for a solution to sleep better on the other side. The company says the 12-pronged side panel (miniature pillow) is ideal for hot sleepers, as air can circulate between your head and the pillow’s parts. It may not be the best cooling pillow we’ve tested, but if you’re looking for something to change up your sleeping habits, this pillow is a great choice.
