Zaay Wade is just 15 years old and has already become the face of the black transgender community. This month, LOGO honored the teenager with a profile where Zaya explains her journey.

The article references Zaya’s “groundbreaking parents” – Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade. The article makes no mention of Zaya’s birth mother or the woman who raised Zaya with a baby — Siovaughn Wade, a prominent Christian pastor and podcaster.

Siovaughn has been noticeably quiet about Zaya’s recent public “coming out.” But it’s clear that Zaya and her mother still have a strong relationship.

During the interview, the 15-year-old says: “There are really people out there who think you’re a kid, it’s a phase, or you don’t really know what you’re talking about. I know I’m trans, and it’s not like one day I just said, ‘I want to try to be trans.’ no So just suck it up. We are who we are.”

Zaya’s father is former pro basketball player Dwyane Wade, who spent most of his 16-year career playing for the National Basketball Association (NBA) Miami Heat and winning three NBA championships, was a 13-time NBA -All-Star, an 8-time All-NBA Team Member and 3-time All-Defensive Team Member. Wade is also Miami’s all-time leader in points, plays, assists, steals, shots made and shots made.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Wade led the United States men’s basketball team, commonly known as the “Redeem Team,” as their top scorer and helped them win the gold medal. During the 2008–09 season, Wade led the league in both total points (2,386) and points per game (30.2), the latter statistic earning him his only NBA title.
