For years, rumors have swirled about the romantic life of 1990s R&B singer Tevin Campbell — and now it’s finally coming out. Media Take Out has confirmed that Tevin has come out publicly as a gay man for the first time ever.
Tevin recently appeared on the People Every Day podcast for an in-depth interview in which he spoke about his life and career and revealed for the first time that he is a gay man in the music industry.
“I call myself a former child star because that’s what I am,” Campbell, 45, says of his musical past. Tevin, who took to the stage with his hit song “Can We Talk” – a song that was almost given to Usher – and earned Campbell a Grammy nomination. “I had no idea, back when I was 15 or 16, when I recorded this song that it was going to have this impact,” says Campbell. “I was just a kid singing in the studio.”
Tevin then switched to his romantic interests. “I haven’t hidden anything about myself. I wasn’t trying to behave in any particular way,” says Tevin. But he also notes about this era in the industry: “You just couldn’t be that [gay] back then.”
“When I came out to my family and friends [at] about 19 or 20, that was it for me. And then I went on the path of self-discovery. I didn’t know who I was,” says Campbell, who has retired from the music industry and credits much of his growth to the six years he performed in the Broadway musical Hairspray, beginning in 2004.
Being with people who were like me, LGBTQ+ people who lived normal lives and had partners. I had never seen that before,” he says. “That was a great time in my life.”
Despite years of speculation, Campbell has kept his personal life largely private. Earlier this year, he responded to a Twitter user’s question about famous singers who are allegedly gay. He simply tweeted, “Tevin is…” and added a rainbow emoji.
