2 firearms stolen in burglary at Rep. Karen Bass’ home

A burglar or burglars broke into the home of Rep. Karen Bass on Friday night and made off with two firearms, the Los Angeles mayoral candidate said in a statement released Saturday.

In the brief statement, Bass said she returned home on Friday to find apparent signs of a break-in and police were called. She said the thief or thieves stole two firearms that were “kept safe and secure” but left behind cash, electronics and other valuables.

“It’s annoying and unfortunately it’s something that far too many Angelenos have faced,” Bass said.

When asked for comment after the statement was released, LAPD officials said they would review their records for more details about the incident.

“We have not yet released any information as to when exactly [the break-in occurred]said Officer J. Chavez, a spokesman for the department.

Bass, a six-year member of Congress representing parts of the West Side and South Los Angeles, has gained a double-digit lead over billionaire mall developer Rick Caruso in polls for the mayoral race, less than two months before Election Day.

The race has intensified in recent days, with Bass and Caruso urging each other to sort out their deals with USC, which has been rocked by several scandals in recent years.

Bass faces new questions about a $95,000 grant awarded to her by USC in 2011, which federal prosecutors said was “critical” to her investigation into alleged corruption at the university’s social work program.
