2 killed by driver fleeing LAPD are identified as homeless people

A man and woman killed when a driver fleeing Los Angeles Police Department crashed into an apparent roadside camp on Tuesday were not housed, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner on Wednesday identified the victims as Alberto Leal, 44, and Lashonda Davis, 43.

Records listed Leal and Davis as homeless, said Sarah Ardalani, a department spokeswoman.

Before the crash, officers responded to a report of domestic violence at the 4800 block of Figueroa Street around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, said Tony Im, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. They found no evidence of domestic violence and left, but were called back to the same location around 12:40 p.m

The suspect, who is described only as a man, fled in his vehicle, Im said, adding that officers searched the area but did not pursue the driver.

Police found the suspect’s vehicle, which drove into the victims at West 52nd Place and South Flower Street, he said.

OnScene.TV’s crash site video showed a sedan with severe front and windshield damage sitting next to a roadside camp with a destroyed canopy, and two bodies under white sheets nearby.

As of Wednesday, the suspect remained hospitalized, Im said. His name could not be released and information on what charges he might be booked under was unavailable. 2 killed by driver fleeing LAPD are identified as homeless people
