29-year-old woman arrested after enrolling as New Brunswick High School student: Police

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (WPVI) — A woman has been arrested for allegedly posing as a student at a New Jersey high school, leaving students feeling insecure after she was allowed to attend class for nearly a week before officers caught on.

Police say Hyejeong Shin, 29, enrolled in New Brunswick High School using a fake birth certificate and attended as a student for four days before being arrested.

Shin was accused of providing a false government document and has since been banned from the school, but parents and students still feel uneasy.

“Last week the administration is said to have let in a 29-year-old,” says a student. “So basically everyone was scared. Some people gave this lady their personal information.”

Students said they did not feel safe and protested at the school on Wednesday afternoon.

“This old woman came into school and was trying to get kids to link,” said another student. “It makes a lot of students feel insecure, and I understand.”

New Brunswick Public Schools Superintendent Aubrey Johnson released a statement saying, “State law prohibits a student from being prevented from attending school for lack of documentation.”

The superintendent’s office goes on to say that there is a preliminary deadline of 30 days and that officials discovered Shin within that time frame.

A review of the minutes was mentioned at a recent school board meeting.
