Looking at the Gujarat Titans (GT) squad ahead of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, not many cricket experts give them a chance to break into the top 4 after the round of the tournament. However, the squad led by Hardik Pandya exceeded expectations in their first season. They finished the tournament period as group leaders, winning 10 of their 14 games.
While Pandya has impressed with the stick, scoring 413 runs with an strike rate of 131.52, with a four-and-a-half-century, opener Shubman Gill has also hit 403 with an strike rate of 133 ,88. He also has forty and fifty to his credit. With the ball, both Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan scored 18 goals each in 14 matches.
3 factors that can prevent GT from winning the IPL 2022 crown
Gujarat will face second place Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2022 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday, May 24.
While they are confident they will do well in the knockout stages, here are three reasons why GT might not win the IPL trophy on their first try.
#1 Their discomfort hits the ball first
Without a doubt, Gujarat is one of the strongest teams in the competition, but they are not invincible. Their displeasure at hitting the ball for the first time was revealed more than once during the tournament period. In fact, their first defeat at IPL 2022 was when they were asked to beat first by SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH). They only won 162 7 points and lost with the score of eight.
In another game against Punjab Kings (PBKS), they decided to hit the stick first after winning. The move backfired as they were held to 143 to 8 and further down by eight quotes.
Even in their last game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), they suffered another hammer eight after deciding to hit the first stroke. Three big defeats while hitting the ball first did not bring good results for the scorer.
Of course, it’s not like the Titans didn’t win the match after hitting the ball first. They beat Delhi Capital (DC) 14 times, RR 37 times and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) eight times. But the fact is still 3/4 of their loss in the league is due to them heading. Given the opportunity, RR could look to exploit this Achilles heel in GT’s game.
#2 No answer to the 3rd question
One of the main reasons why Gujarat struggled with the stick when hitting the ball first is because they haven’t got the 3rd place yet. Vijay Shankar hit the big spot in the first two games of the franchise but didn’t. make an impression. He suffered an injury afterwards, which gave Sai Sudharsan an opportunity to make his mark.
The youngster responded with scores of 35 and 11, only to be eliminated once Shankar was fit. The man then went back and scored another defeat against RR, losing 2-7. Detained in the next game, he scored a goal as GT’s disaster #3 went awry. worse.
After Shankar was eliminated, Gujarat captain Pandya decided to take the one-off position and in his first match in the position he scored 67 out of 49 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). However, a few games later, Sudharsan was recalled and tasked with hitting the ball in 3rd place again. He was the top scorer with 65 games unbeaten against PBKS in a single loss.
However, the musical chairs continued as Pandya returned to 3rd place in the next game. Sudharsan has not been in the squad for the last three games with Matthew Wade being recalled. However, Aussie only managed to get scores of 10, 20 and 16. It remains to be seen who takes the decisive place in Qualifier 1.
#3 Mohammed Shami’s Rhythmic Partner
Veteran midfielder Shami played superbly for Gujarat on possession, especially early in the half. He has scored 18 goals in 14 games with an average rate of 22.88 and an economy rate of 7.77. From KL Rahul to Devon Conway, he has eliminated pathbreakers in the framework of the opposition multiple times. What he lacked though was support from the other end at the start of the inning.
Gujarat started with Varun Aaron, who played the first few matches. Kiwi Lockie Ferguson kicked off IPL 2022 in impressive form but lost its beat as the tournament got underway. He’s won the most 12 hits from the game at an economic rate of 9.06. Yash Dayal did a good job, with nine goals in seven games. But his inexperience was evident when he had already spent more than nine hours eating.
The GT also features Alzarri Joseph, who played eight games and picked up seven wickets. But he has a steady role at the middle director, and the franchise won’t want to tamper with his momentum. Pandya had opened bowling a few games ago, but it wasn’t too effective.
