True Crime Documentaries on Netflix

The true crime genre is rife with exciting affairs, but none entertain fans more than those that come in the form of documentary series. While there are plenty of exciting things to do in this space, it’s hard to argue that Netflix isn’t among the best the industry has to offer.

Netflix isn’t short on exemplary options in its vast offering, and it’s hard for any subscriber not to find something that will no doubt be intrigued by them from start to finish. There are so many notable titles in the excellent library, but it’s the Netflix original programming that really sets it apart from the rest.

The streamer’s outstanding documentaries category is a solidly stacked affair, to say the least, with so many compelling topics ranging in focus from graphic design to sex education and everything you can think of in between. But it’s actually the true crimes that get audiences hooked, and it’s not uncommon for many of the documentary series that belong to the thought-provoking genre to top the streaming service’s charts.

If concerned true-crime fans are looking for a groundbreaking, deep dive into some of the darkest moments in world history, or incredibly extraordinary revelations about the many evils lurking in the shadows of today’s society, look no further than the documentary series right section about the popular streaming service.

If you’re a subscriber looking for truly immersive true-crime reruns, then these 34 best true-crime documentaries on Netflix are for you.

Murdaugh Murders: A Scandal in the South

Murdaugh murders is a recent Netflix documentary that follows the double murder of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh. Maggie’s husband and Paul’s father, Alex Murdaugh, were sentenced to two life sentences with no possibility of parole for the murder of his son and wife in March 2023.

A three-part documentary Murdaugh Murders: A Scandal in the South tells of the downfall of the once prominent Murdaugh family in the Low Country. Before Alex murdered his family members, the family was on a downward spiral that began with a tragic boating accident that resulted in the death of teenager Mallory Beach.

Alex Murdaugh was also later charged with dozens of financial crimes, and the family has also been repeatedly named in connection with the mysterious death of another teenager, Stephen Smith. Also, Murdaugh’s longtime housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, died after allegedly falling down the steps of a Murdaugh family home. The family has been plagued by countless tragedies and suspicious circumstances.

The Netflix documentary does its best to retell each individual event and find out how all of those events combined led to the fateful night Alex Murdaugh killed his wife and son. A Southern Scandal includes first-hand accounts from several people who were there at the time of the boat disaster and who are close to the Murdaugh family.
