5G pole relocated from in front of Sarasota property

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) – Last month, Marla Katz contacted 8 On Your Side for help after a 5G tower was installed in front of the land where she plans to build a house. She said she had no luck contacting Verizon to have the pole removed.

“I can’t reach anyone at Verizon, but I think reaching out to you guys lets them know we’re very disappointed,” Katz said.

According to Katz, the problem was that Verizon installed the poles on the property’s old line, not the new lot. This puts the 5G tower right in front of what will eventually be her front door.

Two days after our story aired last month, City of Sarasota officials reached out to Verizon via email, asking them to move the column “to give homeowners a better view of the property.” street and more consistent with ordinance 20-5313.”

One of the criteria in the ordinance passed in 2020, states that “new communications facilities, power poles, wireless equipment and wireless support structures will be located along common lot routes.” and must not be reserved in front of a home, building or place of business”.

Monday morning, Verizon returned to the scene to remove the pole and relocate it to the shared lot. Katz credits 8 songs on your part for helping to make that happen.

“Honestly, at this point, I don’t think we would have gotten this far without your help so we really appreciate that,” Katz said. “We’re at the point where Verizon has made a deal with us that if we pay to extract the pile, they take care of everything else, thus getting it out our door,” she explains.

Katz is now looking forward to moving forward with construction plans in the Gillespie Park neighborhood of Sarasota.

“We are moving forward and we look forward to building in the vicinity,” she said. “We discovered that we have really great neighbors who are always watching us and that’s amazing and we don’t even live here yet.”

8 Your side has reached out to Verizon for comment on Monday. We did not receive a response to our inquiries by the allotted deadline.
