6 injured when tree falls on group of people celebrating class reunion in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Six people were injured Sunday afternoon when a large tree fell on a group hosting a reunion party at Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park.

According to police, the incident happened around 12:20 p.m. in the 5300 block of N. Georges Hill Drive.

The six injured were between 66 and 67 years old, the police said. The group celebrated a reunion for West Philadelphia High School’s class of 1972.

“Each man ran through this park to collectively pick up heavy branches to remove from classmates,” said Florence Hagains of West Philadelphia.

While people worked to remove heavy branches from those who were stuck, police arrived at the scene within minutes.

The victims were taken to area hospitals where their injuries were treated. All six were listed in stable condition.

“We’re just praying for them and we’re going to try to keep it going, it’s something that’s annual,” Hagains said.

Alumni come together for the annual tradition to give back to the school’s current students and athletes.

“We came together 15 years ago to try to improve the quality of life for students at West Philadelphia High School,” said Michael Brown, president of the West Philadelphia High School Alumni Association.

Brown said he will urge the city to inspect or remove any dead trees in the park because they will be back next August.
