82-year-old New Jersey woman loses $8,000 in ‘grandparent scam’

DEPTFORD TWP., NJ (WPVI) — Libby Maurer, 82, of Deptford Twp., New Jersey, said she was working on a puzzle in her kitchen on Sept. 16 when her phone rang.

“And this person is hysterical, crying on the phone and saying, ‘I was in a car accident, I broke my nose and I split my lip,'” she said.

The distressed person claimed to be her grandson.

He told Maurer that he was in custody for causing the car accident and needed $8,000 in cash to pay a public defender to get him released.

So she went to the bank.

She said her only priority was to help her grandson.

“My hand was shaking when I wanted to get the money from the bank. My whole body was shaking,” said Maurer.

When she got home, a supposed “courier” picked up the money while Libby was on the phone with the “public defender.”

But Libby’s extra oxygen thwarted her plan.

The pipes would not reach the end of the driveway.

“He said go to the curb and he opens the window, just pass it through the window. Well I didn’t do that, the oxygen just went right out so I stayed there,” Libby said.

At that point, their security cameras captured the exchange outside the home and one of the suspects along with the vehicle.

Police say it was a silver 2009-2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring Edition.

Later, Libby called her real grandson and realized it was all a scam.

She said a red flag, which she ignored: the scammer asked her not to tell anyone.

“Years ago I heard about this scam but I was so emotional that I didn’t think twice about anything or question it. If only I had made a call,” Libby said. “Someone would have talked me down.”

At first, Libby said she was embarrassed, but now she’s angry and doesn’t want this to happen to anyone else.

“I believe in karma. I wish them no tragedy. But they won’t enjoy that money,” she said.

The police are still looking for the perpetrators.

If anyone has information about the vehicle or the suspect, contact Det. Maureen Packer at mpacker@deptford-nj.org or 856-845-6300 ext. 1352.
