Canada’s Conservatives have a new leader, their first since Stephen Harper who they would like to support. Earlier this month Pierre Poilevre defeated four opponents and won more than 70% of Conservative member votes and 330 out of 338 constituencies. His victory reflects the Conservatives’ determination to be led by one of their own.
Mr Poilievre, an Ottawa-region MP with Alberta roots, has pledged to scrap the carbon tax, limit deficit spending, end Covid vaccine mandates and sack the central bank governor, who had dismissed inflation as temporary and was slow to counteract it proceeded. Sound familiar? Above all, Mr Poilievre wants to cut bureaucracies that limit competition and increase prices. “Let’s remove the government gatekeepers to build more houses, grow more food and produce more energy right here in Canada,” he said in his acceptance speech.
