Amazon is betting big on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The Lord of the Rings prequel series, rumored to cost over $1 Billionis a streamer’s breakthrough in providing its services with Game of Thrones– Fantasy epic style. Outside of the brief Super Bowl venue, a few promotional posters and some cover stories, details about the show are few and far between — until today, when Amazon announced an extended trailer for Ring of Power. The preview comes a week before the show holds its Comic-Con panel next week, where we’ll no doubt learn more about the series, which will premiere Prime Video on September 2.
But for now, the trailer reveals a bit about exactly when and where the show will take place in the history of JRR Tolkien’s epic saga. To help you get the hang of it all, let’s break down the footage to give you context on what you might have missed. (Slight spoilers from Tolkien’s Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings the next book and series, so skip it if you want to get into the show completely cold.)
The two giant trees seen in this screenshot are Telperion and Laurelin, aka Valinor’s Two Trees. You may remember Valinor by another name: The Land of Immortals, where Frodo sailed to Gandalf, Bilbo, Galadriel, and Elrond at the end. Return of the king, and is essentially Tolkien’s version of Eden. Everything was beautiful and perfect…until it wasn’t.
A dub from Galadriel (Morfydd Clark, in the former role of Cate Blanchett) provides more context: Her mention that “there hasn’t been a sunrise yet” suggests we’ll see some of the First Age of Middle-earth, as detailed in Silmarillion. There was no sun in the first half of the First Age, as it was not created until the second half by a Middle-earth god called Valar. Maybe the series will start with a Fellowship of the RingThat First Age inclusion-style opening, defining where we are when the events of the Second Age begin? For reference: The events of Lord of the Rings trio and Hobbits takes place during the Third Age of Middle-earth.
