A garden watering mistake that may do more harm than good – my tricks make sure your plants’ roots are saturated too

A GARDENING expert shared a common mistake that new gardeners often make when watering plants.
He explains that it can do more harm to your plants than good.
Joe (@joesgarden) shared tips with over 1.5 million TikTok followers.
Picking up the watering can, he explains that potted plants need to be watered in a specific way.
“If you water your potted plants like this, you might do more harm than good,” he said, sprinkling water on the pot.
“Containers are a great way to grow plants if you are renting or have limited space, but be careful when watering plants from above,” he says.
“Although the soil looks saturated, dig a little deeper and it can often dry out.”
To demonstrate, he watered a pot of soil from the top and scooped up some soil with his hands, revealing the dry soil underneath.
Instead, the expert shares tips on how to properly water these crops.
He filled a large bucket with water and placed a pot of plants straight in.
“The soil will draw water through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot, helping to provide your plant with an even amount of water throughout the growing process,” he explains.
For larger pots, he placed a smaller pot in the soil and filled it with water, letting the water run directly down to the roots.
People have taken to the comments section to share their thoughts on the advice.
“I have too many pots, I usually water until I see water coming out of the drainage holes,” one person commented.
“That smaller pot is a great idea, thanks!” another said.
