Belgium waves the white flag against terrorism. This week, the country’s parliament voted to ratify an agreement with Tehran that would allow Iranians convicted of crimes in Belgium to serve their sentences in Iran and vice versa. But the treaty also allows either party to grant amnesty, and there is little doubt that Tehran will release its terrorists, who are now in Belgian prisons.
One of them is Assadolah Assadi, who was a Vienna-based chartered diplomat when he directed a brazen terrorist plot. In 2018, authorities in Belgium, France and Germany arrested several Iranian intelligence ministry officials, including Mr Assadi, who was planning to bomb a political rally in Paris. Had the attack against Maryam Rajavi, the leader of Iran’s National Council of Resistance, been successful, it would have killed scores of innocent civilians – possibly including high-profile Westerners scheduled as speakers including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.
