A School Board Revolt in Florida

Tuesday’s election showed Republicans’ medium-term weaknesses (see below), but the Florida school board election was an exception. Conservatives reversed control of at least two major counties that had placed unions over children.

25 of the 30 school board members appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis won or advanced in their races, championed parental rights, transparency, school choice and safety. GOP-backed candidates won three Sarasota County elections, creating a new 4-1 majority. They also scored two major victories in Miami-Dade, which is now becoming the largest US school district with a Conservative majority. Both school boards last year voted to require students to continue wearing masks, contrary to parents and Florida law.
