‘Abbott Elementary’: Emmy-winning comedy is back for season 2

LOS ANGELES — Abbott Elementary cast and crew are on the way. They’ve gathered their pens, chalk, paper and notebooks and are switching to ABC from Tuesday night to Wednesday night.

“We’re so happy to be back and back together and just getting back to doing this show that we really love,” said series creator Quinta Brunson.

And with school back in class, there’s nowhere these “teachers” would rather be.

“I’m looking forward to this thing that we’re doing. And not just because they bring me breakfast, but that’s a big reason,” said Lisa Ann Walter. “But it’s actually working on set with people I adore, surrounded by this amazing group of talent and also the writers and our entire crew. I can’t wait for that. So it doesn’t feel like going to work. It feels like having fun.”

Brunson, who just won an Emmy for comedy writing, says she had no intention of becoming a spokesperson for the teaching profession. She just knew that this field was rich in relatable stories.

“I knew there was humor, heart, love, but also reality in it,” Brunson said. “And I’m so happy that even though we weren’t meant to be substitutes for teachers, we’re doing such a caring and good job that, if that makes sense, teachers feel represented. I’m glad we’re doing our jobs well enough for them to appreciate what we’re doing.”

“It’s been wonderful to hear teachers talk about how much they feel seen, how much they feel respected, how much uplifted they feel,” said Sheryl Lee Ralph.

Ralph also won an Emmy for her role in Abbott Elementary. She is passionate about providing our children with the best possible education.

“We can do better, we will do better,” Ralph said. “And I’m excited that Abbott Elementary exists to show people that there is a common path forward.”

Ralph is excited about something she would particularly like to see on the show this season.

“Oh holy night!” sang Ralph. “We must have a Christmas concert!”

Abbott Elementary airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
