Abe Killing Spotlights Japanese Politicians’ Links to Religious Groups

TOKYO — At a campaign event outside of Tokyo in June, the first dignitary from a sister organization of the Unification Church, which works to strengthen Japan’s military and oppose the Chinese Communist Party, was unveiled.

Soon after, the audience heard from another man who shared these views: the former prime minister Shinzo Abe. Just over a month later, Mr Abe was shot and killed by a man who police said had a grudge against an unspecified “religious group”.
