‘Adipurush’ Trailer Reveals Long-Awaited Ramayana Adaptation Starring ‘Baahubali’s Prabhas

T-Series has unveiled the first teaser for the long-awaited mythological film Adipurushbased on the Indian epic Ramayana. Baahubali star prabhas plays Lord Rama in the film directed by Om Raut. The teaser was released at a major event in the city of Ayodhya, Lord Ram’s birthplace.

Not a single picture of Adipurush (which roughly translates to “first man” in Sanskrit) was shown prior to this teaser, with the exception of a poster earlier this week. This is essentially the first time audiences have gotten a glimpse of what Raut has been cooking up in years, and it’s safe to say “half-finished cartoon” wasn’t what anyone expected. Raut relied heavily on green screens in his debut film, the blockbuster historical epic Tanhaji: The unsung warriorand he seems to have doubled that aesthetic Adipurush.

The Ramayana has been adapted numerous times for the stage, literature and film. It is a story of good versus evil, a story that is familiar to virtually everyone in India, regardless of their beliefs. It is also among the most important texts of the Hindu religion and tells the story of Lord Rama who must challenge the demon king of Lanka, Ravana, and save his wife Sita from his clutches. Lord Rama is accompanied on his mission by his brother Lakshmana and their companion Hanuman and his monkey army. The return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after successfully defeating evil and saving Sita is celebrated by Hindus around the world on the festivals of Dussehra and Diwali.

Saif Ali Khan plays Ravana, Kriti Sanon plays Sita, and sunny sing Stars as Lakshmana. Khan previously worked with Raut Tanhaji. Western audiences would recognize him as the star of India’s first Netflix original series, the International Emmy-nominated crime drama holy games. Prabhas is of course the star of RRR director SS Rajamouli‘s Blockbuster Baahubali Movies — Baahubali: The beginningand Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.

These films also drew from Indian mythological epics, as did Rajamouli’s recent Telugu-language blockbuster. RRR. Indeed, some of the images in the final showdown of RRR draws directly from the Ramayana. But while these films are a great example of how ambitious Indian films can be despite relatively small budgets – RRR the production allegedly cost around 70 million US dollars; tiny compared to the biggest Hollywood movies — Adipurush feels pretty dated (despite the fact that it reportedly cost around $60 million). The film may also be included in a new wave of mainstream Indian centers reflecting the rise in right-wing political sentiment in the country RRR and the newer ones Brahmāstra – Part One: Shiva. This is a context that Western audiences may not be entirely familiar with, but is nonetheless worth mentioning.

Adipurush will also seek to capitalize on the increasing popularity of South Indian films; This is not a Bollywood film per se. “Bollywood” is a term commonly used for Hindi language films Adipurush mainly features Bollywood actors, Prabhas is a Telugu star. To cast as wide a net as possible Adipurush will be published in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam on January 12, 2023. The film will also be released in 3D and IMAX.
