AEW’s William Regal expresses pride in his retirement match with Cesaro

William Regal recently discussed his final bout with Cesaro, then retiring and wrestling for his son.

The former ring king took a break from the ring after his match with Swiss Superstar Cesaro at NXT in 2013. Since then, he has stepped into the ring behind closed doors to take on Sami Zayn and most recently , wrestled with his own son at the WWE Performance Center. His son works for NXT UK under the name Charlie Dempsey.

However, he said it was the retirement match he was most proud of. Speaking to Metro, Lord Regal compared the clash to the spectacle of Elvis Presley, using the famous line “Elvis has left the building”:

“I wrestled with my son for an hour before Christmas in PC in Orlando. I can wrestle. I want the Cesaro match to be my last.” Elvis has left the building.” That’s why Colonel Tom Parker never let Elvis do an encore. Don’t spoil it for yourself. It was as good a match as possible let me finish. my career, and 30 years later, it’s someone else’s turn. Why ruin it?” (H/T

Thank you @WWE for a great 21 years of performance. You have given a guy who is happy and in carnival wrestling wonderland a glamorous life for 21 years. No complaints and please don’t waste anyone’s time replying as I will not take any bad action to be said against the company.x

Regal also confirmed in the same interview that he never intended to return to the ring, perhaps disappointing a section of AEW fans.

Cesaro has been touted as a potential ‘Joker’ opponent against Samoa Joe in AEW’s Owen Hart Cup

After beating The Acclaimed’s Max Caster in their qualifying clash, ROH TV Champion Samoa Joe was held to a draw by a mysterious ‘Joker’ participant in the quarterfinals of the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament .

Thanks to their shared history in both WWE and ROH, and his departure from the latter earlier in the year, fans speculate that Cesaro could be the mysterious challenger.

Despite veterans like William Regal heaping praise on the Swiss Superman, he never found his true potential in WWE.

There are plenty of names beyond Samoa Joe in AEW for the ROH veteran to get to know them, among many new opportunities. Only time will tell if the former US champion will claim to be ‘All-Elite’.
