African grey parrot stolen from Santa Ana porch reunited with owners after two weeks

A $2,500 California parrot has been reunited with its family more than two weeks after brazen thieves were caught on video stealing the bird from a porch.

Luna, a gray parrot, was stolen by a man from the porch of Karen Gerardo’s Santa Ana home on March 12.

On Tuesday, Gerardo was reunited with her beloved pet of 10 years after officials were able to locate a suspect believed to have taken the bird.

Video of the theft went viral last week and showed a red SUV pulling up in front of the Orange County home and double-parking. A gray hooded figure gets out of the car and grabs the large cage in which the bird is housed.

“Lost pets are rarely returned,” a grateful Gerardo said in an interview with ABC 7. “And the result we had today is just amazing.”

The parrot, named Luna, can mimic human speech and costs $2,500

In the shocking footage of the doorbell ringing, one thief is helped by his friend as they load the cage into the vehicle before driving off.

Santa Ana Police were able to use the surveillance video to track down the SUV.

They identified a man as a potential suspect and arrived at the man’s home on Tuesday to conduct a search.

According to ABC 7, the suspect was not at home.

A woman inside said she received the expensive parrot as a gift from the man who stole it, whose name has not been released.

It is not known what their relationship is like at this time.

On average, gray parrots cost between $1,500 and $3,500.

A Facebook post by Abigail Ayapantecatl a few weeks ago said the situation was dire and the family were trying hard to bring the bird home.

‘Please share! We are trying to find the thieves who stole my brother’s gray parrot,” Ayapantecatl wrote. “Our parrot is sick and needs medication every day.”

At the time, the woman said the bird was just “taking a breath” when the men took her and the bird was just outside for a short time.

“My brother tried to chase them but they drove down fast,” she wrote.

“We couldn’t really adjust to her loss,” Luna’s owner Karen Gerardo said

“We’re just really happy she came back and it’s thanks to all the help and effort,” said the bird’s owner

Luna’s family say they’re just glad she’s back with them after the scary incident.

“We couldn’t really prepare for their loss,” Gerardo told KTLA.

“Birds like these imprint on a person, so it affects them, too,” the woman said.

“We’re just really happy she came back and it’s thanks to all the help and effort,” said the bird’s owner.

Only one unnamed suspect has been identified and police are actively searching for him and are investigating leads to the second man in the video.
