in the last 30 years, Akira Toriyama has become well known as the man behind Dragon Ball Z and artists of acclaimed JRPGs like chrono trigger, dragon quest, and Blue Dragon. As a manga creator, his career dates back to the mid-70s, although not all of his pros and consdragon ball Work (most of it one-shots) has transitioned to anime. The last of his non-dragon ball Works to be adapted for anime Doctor Slump in the late ’90s, but now another of his works is coming to the small screen.
Previously revealed earlier in the week ahead of a full reveal this weekend Jump FestaToriyama’s sci-fi comedy manga sand land is becoming an anime thanks to Bandai Namco Filmworks. That Adaptation is being edited by Studios Sunrise (Gundam: The Witch of Mercury), anime (Chronos ruler) and Kamikaze Douga (Star Wars Visions: The Duel). As Dragon Ball Super: Superhero Earlier this year, Toriyama created the original story for the adaptation, which appears to have a similar CG/3D art style to that film. It’s not clear at this time if this will be a single film or a one-and-done series.
Toriyama published sand land from the year 2000 and tells the story of the demon prince Beelzebub, who goes on a quest with his friend Thief to help Sherriff Rao find a new water supply for Rao’s people. The manga was very short-lived, comprising only 14 chapters from May 2000 to August of the same year. It’s unclear why Toriyama and Bandai decided to adapt it now, but perhaps it’s just being used to introduce audiences to some of his lesser-known works.
Expect the sand land Adaptation for release in 2023.
