Alex Trebek birthday: Remembering late ‘Jeopardy!’ host, who was born 82 years ago on this day

NEW YORK – No question: Alex Trebek will be greatly missed by all of his fans.

Friday, July 22 would have been the late Jeopardy! 82nd birthday of the host.

Trebek was born on July 22, 1940. He died in November 2020 following his open and public battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

For nearly four decades, he was the man with all the answers, style and a sense of humor who asked questions and earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for most game show episodes hosted by the same person.

He was a master of format, conversing politely with participants and seeming genuinely pleased when they answered correctly. He was also able to move the game along in a brisk, no-nonsense manner when people were struggling for answers.

He has won seven Daytime Emmys for his work on the show and received a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award in 2011.

Trebek has been the face of the game show since its Daytime Syndication debut in 1984. At over 8,200 episodes, he holds the Guinness World Record for most game show episodes hosted by the same host.

“I’m like the Energizer bunny,” he said in 2014. “Bum, boom, boom.”

The only time someone other than Trebek hosted an episode during his Jeopardy tenure was when Trebek and Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak traded the shows for an April Fool’s joke, according to the Associated Press.

In the months leading up to his death, the game show host celebrated his 36th anniversary with “America’s Favorite Quiz Show” and published his memoir, The Answer Is…: Reflections on My Life.

In March 2019, Trebek announced his cancer diagnosis in a video message posted to Jeopardy’s social media accounts.

“Usually the prognosis for that isn’t very encouraging, but I’ll fight it and keep working on it,” he said. “I aim to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.”

The last episode Trebek recorded before his death aired on Friday January 8, 2021. There was no final goodbye and no final remarks or special farewell from the presenter, unaware that he would die less than two weeks after recording his final episode.

Trebek said goodbye with the words: “Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for taking the time with us. See you again next week.”
