Alleged Proud Boys group disrupt drag show event at bar near Sacramento

A Pride Month drag show in the Sacramento area had to be postponed after right-wing extremists disrupted Thursday night’s event, officials said.

A Yolo County group for LGBTQ youth was planning a “drag happy hour” at Mojo’s Lounge & Bar in Woodland, California, when a suspected Proud Boys group arrived and began threatening violence, organizers and authorities said.

“People were here, upset that the bar was hosting their Pride event,” Woodland Deputy Police Commissioner Anthony Cucchi told KCRA3. “We tried to intervene as quickly as possible. It was quite a chaotic scene.”

The far-right group eventually left the group on their own, and no arrests were made, according to the broadcaster.

Organizers later opted to reschedule the event to a new date, which has not yet been determined.

The event was co-organized by Mojo’s Lounge & Bar and Elevate Queer Yolo, a program offered by a regional health clinic aimed at empowering young queer adults.

The drag show was billed as “Woodland’s first drag night” and urged young people to “be proud, loud and joyful with your local LGBTQIA+ community!” according to the event flyer. Woodland, a small town about 15 miles northeast of Sacramento, is known for its rural atmosphere.

After hearing that a suspected Proud Boys group in the area had been notified of the event, organizers initially made plans to continue the show with additional security on site.

As participants arrived for a more “low-key” gathering, a group of agitators emerged and began hurling threats and homophobic slurs, Dr. Melissa Marshall, CEO of CommuniCare Health Centers, the health clinic that helped organize the event.

“This hate group tried to storm into the bar,” she said. “At some point pepper spray was used.”

She said some of the drag performers may have been attacked, but that no one chose to press charges.

“We believe these individuals were not from Woodland; The community has been incredibly supportive,” she said.

The event had been circulated on the hate Twitter page Libs of TikTok and had received over 600 retweets and 1,800 likes on the page.

The incident came weeks after right-wing extremists disrupted a Drag Queen Story Hour event in the Bay Area. The event, held at a library south of Oakland, was canceled after a group of five men described as members of the Proud Boys marched into the library shouting insults.
