Amazon built Eero WiFi extenders into its latest Echo Dot speakers

Amazon isn’t done updating its line of Eero routers this year, although not quite in the way you’d expect. To start off, the brand’s new Echo Dot speakers will now also act as Eero WiFi extenders. Plug one in and get up to 1,000 square feet of additional network coverage. In other words, that speaker on your bedside table could improve internet connectivity in your office.

The base Echo Dot is available to pre-order today for $50, while the Echo Dot with Clock and the colorful Echo Dot Kids retail for $60. Given that an Eero 6 extender costs $79, it’s an easy choice if you’re using one of Amazon’s routers – you can pay less to boost your WiFi network while adding speaker capabilities.

There is also a useful update for existing routers. The Eero team is preparing an internet backup feature that will automatically switch to an alternate connection in the event of a failure and switch back when things return to normal. For example, you can lean on your phone’s hotspot while your cable service is down. The technology will be available in the “coming months,” although you’ll need either a $99-a-year Eero Plus subscription (formerly Eero Secure+) or service from a supporting ISP.

Eero PoE 6 Power over Ethernet WiFi Router

You can also expect new dedicated Eero hardware, although this time it’s aimed at demanding home networks and businesses. As the name suggests, the Eero PoE 6 router (pictured above) gets its power over Ethernet, making it easier to mount on a ceiling or wall. The dual-band device achieves a peak performance of 1.5 Gbps and a maximum coverage of 2,000 square feet. It will be available this October through installers in the US and Canada for $300 and will be available on the Amazon store in early 2023. An Eero PoE Gateway ($650) is also due early next year via Amazon and ISPs’ website. It can share an internet connection at up to 10Gbps via two 10Gbps Ethernet jacks and eight PoE-enabled 2.5Gbps jacks.

There are services to match: Everyone who buys Eero PoE hardware gets five years access to a Pro Installers software suite that helps technicians optimize networks for customers. Businesses, meanwhile, have the option of a $299 Eero for Business plan, which offers hardware and software for businesses with little to no IT infrastructure of their own. It arrives in the US and UK in early 2023.
