Amazon has struck a deal to buy primary care healthcare company One Medical for $3.9 billion. The provider offers in-person grooming in US locations, but perhaps of greater interest to Amazon, it offers digital and virtual grooming services. The companies said One Medical makes it easier for people “to book appointments, renew prescriptions, access up-to-date health records and improve health outcomes.”
One Medical’s mission is to “make quality care more affordable, accessible and enjoyable”. It has 767,000 members, as CNBC Notes, with 188 medical practices in 25 markets. The acquisition is subject to One Medical stockholder approval and other closing conditions. Amir Dan Rubin, CEO of One Medical, will remain at the helm after the transaction closes.
Amazon believes that “healthcare is at the top of the list of experiences that need to be reinvented,” according to Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services. “We love to invent to simplify what should be simple, and we want to be one of the companies helping to dramatically improve the healthcare experience for years to come,” Lindsay said in a statement-backed approach to healthcare, we believe we can and will help more people get better care, when and how they need it.”
In recent years, Amazon has made a notable foray into the healthcare market. In 2019, the company launched an app-based health service for its employees, which it later opened up to other companies. It also has a pharmacy service that delivers prescription drugs to Prime users within two days. The company opened Amazon Pharmacy two years after buying online pharmacy PillPack. Last year it announced a version of Alexa for healthcare providers.
