AMERICAN Airlines will launch new direct flights from the US to a Caribbean island next year.
The new route starts in Miami and runs daily to the British Virgin Islands.
It is the first direct flight from the United States, with current routes requiring a stopover in Puerto Rico or a ferry from St. Thomas.
The new two-hour flights will start in November 2023.
Passengers will fly on the 88-seat Embraer E175 aircraft, which will depart from Miami Airport and land at Beef Island Airport.
Daily flights depart at 10:20 am and arrive in Miami at 1:30 pm local time, while return flights depart at 2:30 pm and arrive in Miami at 5:40 pm.
British Virgin Islands Minister for Communications and Labor Kye Rymer said: “We are delighted to welcome American Airlines back to the British Virgin Islands.
“This endeavor to offer direct flights between Miami and the British Virgin Islands will make it significantly easier, faster and more affordable for people from around the world to get to the British Virgin Islands, which are one of Ireland’s top tourist destinations in the world.”
It’s not the first Caribbean island that American Airlines flies directly to.
Last year, the airline launched the first direct flights from Miami to Dominica and Anguilla.
And direct flights from Austin to Montego Bay in Jamaica were also introduced last year by American Airlines.
Americans wishing to visit Europe can take advantage of a number of new low-cost airlines introducing cheap transatlantic fares next year.
Norse Airways, which was founded last year, already offers flights from New York to London Gatwick.
The airline has since announced that it will begin flights from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Paris in March 2023.
Incumbent airline JetBlue, which has been flying since 1998, will follow suit with non-stop flights from JFK to Paris in the summer of 2023.
And new airline Fly Atlantic is scheduled to fly from the US to Belfast in Northern Ireland in 2024.
Icelandic airline Play currently offers cheap routes to and from Europe from the US, with flights from Orlando to London Stansted for just £225 – although a stopover in Iceland is required.
