Most Americans know the nations of the vast South and West Pacific primarily from the island-hopping battles of World War II. Countries remain critical to American defense, and as such, the Biden administration’s US-Pacific Islands Country Summit this week is a welcome event. The key is convincing Pacific leaders that the US will stay there.

The region has become an arena for US-China competition as Beijing builds a blue-water navy and global network of bases to project power. Chinese dominance in the region would complicate America’s ability to defend the so-called first island chain, which includes Taiwan and Japan. And it would make US bases in Guam more vulnerable.
