Amputees discover new possibilities at specialized fitness event

BENSALEM, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — The amazing stories of amputees converged on the Holy Ghost Preparatory School track today, opening doors to new opportunities in the world of fitness and independence.

“I was amputated three years ago and it was due to trauma I received in a caving accident 20 years ago,” said Eileen Garney of Annville, Pennsylvania.

Garney was just 19 when a 50-foot fall and five-hour rescue changed her life forever.

“I loved running and I loved just doing anything that was physical and I lost it,” she said. “So, to be able to come back to this 20 years later, I feel like I’m actually an athlete again. It’s really exciting.”

Garney had this opportunity through her prosthetist and Lawall Prosthetics and Orthotics, which connects amputees to life-changing devices across the tri-state area. Three years ago, practitioners came together to establish the offshoot of the non-profit organization Team Lawall.

The annual crown jewel of the various events is the Level Up fitness clinic. Each exercise rotation is adapted to be accessible to those with physical disabilities.

“We have CrossFit, yoga and running instructors,” said Ann Lawall, president of Team Lawall. “We’re just trying to get people back into doing the things they love, honestly.”

The event took place today for only the second time since its inception in 2019. People of all skill levels have enjoyed pushing their limits and discovering or rediscovering a new world of sporting possibilities.

“It’s an amazing event and it just shows that disability isn’t what you think it is and that you can take yourself to the next level,” said Brittany Blythe, who suffered a bilateral amputation when she was two years old.
