An Alternative to Expanded ObamaCare Subsidies

The new Democratic Reconciliation Act includes a three-year extension of improved ObamaCare subsidies — which is bad policy motivated by electoral politics. It is part of the Anti-Inflation Act drafted by the Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.). Mr Manchin is reportedly concerned about rising prices and the deficit. But this increase in subsidies would increase inflation and increase the deficit. Democrats want it because the original expanded subsidies introduced by America’s bailout plan in 2021 will expire after 2022. If nothing is done, registrants will be notified of large premium increases just before the midterm elections.

Fortunately, there is a responsible solution to the Democrats’ political problem that keeps the worst effects of expansion at bay: allow existing registrants to keep the increased subsidy, but prevent new registrants from receiving it. An Alternative to Expanded ObamaCare Subsidies
