China this week is attempting to show the world it can isolate Taiwan by demonstrating live military drills and trade restrictions. One non-military way the US can respond is to expand economic and free trade ties with the island democracy.
Beijing claims its escalations are in response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan this week. After meeting the President Tsai Ing-wen, the speaker of the House of Representatives, said she was “discussing a trade deal that may be possible soon”. That’s good news, and the Democrats who now rule Washington could act quickly to help Taiwan withstand China’s economic duress.
