Like Paul Rudd, we’re still impressed that Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Douglas are in the MCU.

The first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were very well defined. phase four? Not as much. However, we have a feeling that won’t be said about Phase Five, which begins with the release of next month Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Marvel Studios has just released a new featurette about the film, which hits theaters on February 17th. In it, stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jonathan Majors, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discuss why Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Phase Five begins and begins to hint at what set the events of this film in motion. Listen.

Everyone here is talking about a good game and we are sure that everything that happens in this movie, especially with Kang the Conquerer, will have a big impact on the future: The Kang Dynasty, Secret Wars, etc. But let’s rewind a little. Feige is here semi-comfortably talking about Phase Five without really acknowledging Phase Four. Phase Four was very strange and, unlike anything before it, did more to complicate Marvel’s legacy and saga than anything else.

Do you realize there were 17 new tracks of storytelling in Phase Four (including movies, shows, and specials), almost all of which inserted brand-new, seemingly pivotal characters or concepts into the MCU’s structure without making a connection? That’s almost as much as the first three phases combined. Also, it happened over the course of basically 18 months. The first three phases lasted 11 years. You don’t have to be great at math to realize that a new hero or concept introduced about once a month straight for a year and a half doesn’t have the cohesion or impact that basically two movies a year before that is .

All that is to say Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania could be a smash. But it carries a lot of weight when it comes to getting the Marvel Cinematic Universe back on the rails.
