Anthony Davis – Winless Lakers need to ‘stay even-keeled’

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — After a 33-49 season in which they missed the playoffs and are currently winless in the first week of the new season, the Los Angeles Lakers are on high alert, Anthony Davis said Tuesday.

“Obviously there’s a sense of urgency,” Davis said after practice. “They don’t want to dig too big a hole. But we have to stay balanced. We mustn’t get confused or nervous and things like that. Just like when we win 12 in a row. We don’t want to get too high.”

Davis’ upbeat attitude echoed the sentiment he shared last season, when he said in late November after a 10-11 start by the Lakers, “We could have a 10-game win streak now, a 12-game win streak on the.” narrative is different.”

LA went on to win six out of eight, but never went on a winning streak longer than four games last season.

Davis said the Lakers’ 0-3 start will set them up for better results as the season progresses.

“We believe that all of this ‘adversity’ will be good for us,” Davis said. “We’re glad it’s happening in October and not March or April. But we’re going to take shots, keep defending as we defend and try to get in [Wednesday] and Friday and win.”

The Lakers are one of three winless teams this season, along with the Orlando Magic (0-4) and the Sacramento Kings (0-3). They embark on a two-game road trip, starting with the Denver Nuggets (2-2) and followed by the Minnesota Timberwolves (2-2).

LA ranks wide in the league by 3-point percentage, shooting 21.2%, while the next closest team, Minnesota, shoots 28.7%.

“On the track, our shot selection was very poor,” Davis said of the Lakers’ fourth-quarter execution in their loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. “We have to make good shot selections.”

However, Davis pointed to the Lakers’ defensive commitment as an encouraging sign.

The Lakers allow 1,007 points per possession so far, behind only the Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks, and also lead the league in steals with 11.3 per game.

“We’re constantly learning from each other,” Davis said. “The good thing is that we’re third in the league in defense. We’re in the top 10 in all statistical categories. We just have to keep going. Keep your head down and move on with that attitude. We’re going to Denver tomorrow to win.”
