Antonio Conte has told Tottenham Hotspur they need to invest “70 or 80 million pounds” in players if they want to become Premier League title contenders like Arsenal and Chelsea.
Spurs started the new year and 2023 with a home loss to Aston Villa, with Conte telling Sky Sports after the game that better players are needed from the transfer market to improve his team’s ‘quality’ and be title challengers in the current Premier League Leaders Arsenal and eighth place Chelsea.
Perhaps the Italian, who won the Premier League title at Stamford Bridge, was referring to Chelsea’s previous editions that have helped them win titles because their latest summer rush hasn’t started well.
While Arsenal sit at the top of the Premier League table with the biggest grins on their faces, those across London dropped points to start the new year.
After Aston Villa won 2-0 from Unai Emery in north London, the pressure is on Graham Potter as Chelsea have dropped points at relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest.
Still, Spurs fans were left frustrated during and after their loss to Villa when Conte broadcast this message.
“The message (to the frustrated Tottenham fans eliminated during the Aston Villa defeat) is always the same,” said Conte. “I’ve never spoken about our team this season, that we could be competitive to fight for victory (the Premier League title).
“Since the start of the season, I say we’ve been creating and we’re trying to build a solid foundation. If we want to be title contenders, if we want to try to win something, then you need a solid base. A solid foundation means you need to have your team and roster 13 or 14 strong. And then hire one or two players every year, key players to improve the quality.
“For that reason it means investing £60m, £70m or £80m. That’s how you improve quality – then you become Premier League title contenders like Manchester City, like Liverpool, Chelsea, like Man United and Arsenal. They did the same. Arsenal started doing that three or four years ago.”
CONTE IS NOT THE PROBLEM AT SPURS
The former Juventus manager has enjoyed a trophy-filled career so far, entering a dressing room at Tottenham where there simply are no winners.
In order to advance these steps, the foundations must be laid. Arsenal are doing just that through their struggles with Arteta, who didn’t have the reputation to begin with, with his manager.
And now they are being rewarded for it.
Those in the Hotspur Way boardroom will need to back Conte again in January and summer so they can step forward. The big problem beyond that is that Conte hasn’t signed a new contract yet.
