Apple isn’t letting Twitter rebrand as X in the App Store

If you want to download Elon Musk’s X app on your iPhone, you need to download Twitter.

In Apple’s App Store, the app is still listed under the name Twitter because all apps must be listed with at least two characters. The Bleeping Computer site noticed this.

I tried searching for X, X-App, and Twitter in the App Store on my iPhone, but Twitter actually stuck. If you search for X, you get results like Xbox and a VPN service. An X App search returns Twitter as a result. The app’s landing page has the big X logo… and the name Twitter.

Musk pulled the trigger on his long-planned Twitter rebranding as the X this week, and it was, to put it kindly, a mess. The branding is still a cross between Twitter and the generic X and nothing really works together. The App Store is really just the finishing touch.

However, Twitter is now displayed as an X in the Google Play Store and one has to imagine that things will eventually work out with Apple. Until then, however, it remains with Twitter. At least in the App Store.
