Apple’s new AirPods Pro have touch controls

Three years after Apple released the AirPods Pro, the company is finally ready to talk about the second incarnation of the earbuds at its big hardware event in September. Previous reports suggested that the AirPods Pro 2 would not feature any major design changes, with most of the changes being reserved for the interior. But there’s one major update to the exterior: touch controls. You can control audio playback and volume with swipe gestures on the AirPods Pro sticks.

The earbuds are powered by a new chip, the H2. Apple claims this will help the AirPods Pro cancel up to twice as much noise. You can also expect an improved transparency mode. There’s also a new driver that could help improve audio quality, and there’s support for spatial audio and dynamic head-tracking. Additionally, you can use your iPhone’s camera to set up a custom spatial audio profile.

In terms of listening time, Apple says you can get up to six hours of active noise-cancelling on a single charge, or 5.5 hours when using spatial audio. Apple claimed the original AirPods Pro offered 4.5 hours of playback with ANC on, so that’s a 33 percent improvement. The charging case, on the other hand, offers 30 hours of listening time, which is six hours more than the last model. Speaking of which, you can charge the new charging case with an Apple Watch charger, as well as a Lightning cable, MagSafe, or a Qi charger (no USB-C yet, unfortunately).

This time each earbud can play a sound if it’s missing, hopefully to make it easier to find it with the help of Find My. The charging case also has a speaker to help you locate it if it’s misplaced.

You don’t have to wait too long to get your hands on the second-gen AirPods Pro: they’re available to order on September 9 for $249 and will ship on September 23.
