Argentina kick off their rugby championship season against New Zealand when the two sides meet in Mendoza.

The Pumas secured a historic first away win against the All Blacks last year and go into the Rugby Championship with plenty of confidence.

With the World Cup in France fast approaching, both teams have made a number of interesting decisions as Michael Cheika and Ian Foster try to narrow down a larger squad to a 33-man group set to travel to the tournament in the autumn.

Foster will step down as New Zealand head coach after the World Cup, while Scott Robertson will take charge of the national team after a period of continued success with the Crusaders.

One of the stars of Super Rugby Pacific for the Chiefs, Damian McKenzie created the first chance in the All Blacks’ fly-half, while Argentina have opted for the talented Lucio Cinti at centre-back as part of an exciting line of defence.

mutilated! My word, this is a massive hit by Sam Cane, A picture perfect technique to reposition Sebastian Cancelliere’s ribs while the wing hits a short line on the inside of Santiago Carerras, ending the Argentine attack before it even started. Aaron Smith cheers and roars as best he can as his captain tackles.

ATTEMPT! Argentina 0:24 NEW ZEALAND (try by Rieko Ioane, 30 minutes)

Nice footwork and Rieko Ioane shoots through!

A fourth point for New Zealand and again it was well done. Argentina did well at first, with a couple of burly bouncers throwing first Jordie Barrett and then Shannon Frizell out the front entrance. But the All Blacks just keep asking different questions – Damian McKenzie moves a little further on first receiver, putting his foot down to create a crease in the defensive line while pocketing a tonking as he clears a pass. Ioane grabs right and steps off him in a single movement, using the most skillful move of all to make the most of a half gap before surviving the cover defender’s challenge and grabbing the line. McKenzie converted.

Argentina – New Zealand 0:17, 28 minutes

No, the officials are convinced that Rodrigo Bruni’s outstretched arm was part of a tackle’s natural wrap. All right, you’d say, although I suspect the number eight’s outstretched left limb was more intentional than he cares to admit.

So just a scrum eight meters to the left. Lots of leeway for the Argentine defence.

Well, that might be interesting. A crosskick from Damian McKenzie lands in the hands of Jordie Barrett, and Caleb Clarke then tries to play an offload infield to Beauden Barrett, who seems ready to gallop in.

An Argentinian hand gets in the way – that looked deliberate at first glance…

Argentina – New Zealand 0:17, 26 minutes

Every time the All Blacks attack, it feels like Argentina just keeps going. New Zealand win the gainline on virtually every carry, with Thomas Gallo’s off-ball tackle on Ethan de Groot earning the visitors another penalty.

Argentina – New Zealand 0:17, 25 minutes

Here comes New Zealand. Ardie Savea hits three to escape from his own territory and then a penalty is shot into Argentina’s 22.

Argentina 0-17 New Zealand, 23 minutes

Argentina is beginning to find its rhythm. Nice interplay between defenders and forwards as they work their way to the edge, a massive save from Matias Moroni who saves Ardie Savea before Rodrigo Bruni takes a more direct path.

Another try saver from Damian McKenzie! Excellent save from the fly half to save his Chiefs teammate Emoni Narawa, seemingly beaten by Moroni as the center cornered, but McKenzie got there just in time!

Argentina 0-17 New Zealand, 22 minutes

New Zealand survived! Variant of Argentina throwing to the tail causing Pablo Matera to rage but Damian McKenzie gets his ax and chops him down. There’s still an excellent scoring opportunity with Argentina’s forwards winning the race around the corner, but Rodrigo Bruni can’t hold on to a pass on his thighs with few reinforcements in front of him.

Argentina 0-17 New Zealand, 21 minutes

Julian Montoya is quite a skilled chariot driver, and he likes what he sees at first glance. New Zealand infringes to ensure he doesn’t advance to the finish line.

Argentina – New Zealand 0:17, 19 minutes

Sam Cane and Shannon Frizell pull off a smashing double on Tomas Lavanini – the only problem is that the lock doesn’t carry the ball. Penalty for Argentina, who are promoted to New Zealand’s group of 22. You need more of a score here.
