Despite an incredible about-face since the Manchester United legend took charge in October, Boro’s hopes of promotion were dashed by Coventry in midweek.

And now the 27-year-old striker could be promoted to the Premier League on his own.

After a remarkable season in which he scored 29 goals, Boro could get the big bucks they want for Akpom as several top teams look for a new goalscorer.

The former Arsenal striker, who failed to break through at Emirates, began the season training with Boro’s Under-21 team.

He arrived at Riverside from PAOK in 2020.

However, he was soon sent back to the Greek club by Neil Warnock and then left on the sidelines by Chris Wilder.

Carrick replaced the sacked Wilder in October with Boro, who was sitting at No. 22 on the table.

But he soon turned the Teessiders into promotion candidates.

Akpom scored 29 goals in all competitions, including 28 in the league, making him the division’s top scorer.

He was also the first player since Bernie Slaven 33 years ago to score 20 or more league goals for the club in a season.
