Americans will soon have a chance to vote in the Eurovision Song Contest, the music contest that celebrates the splendor of pop music and helped launch ABBA’s and Celine Dion.
The pomp and spectacle of Eurovision has been compared to the Olympics. It is watched by around 160 million people on TV in Europe and Australia. It remains niche entertainment in the United States, an oddity around the world with unknown performers in weird costumes performing ballads, electropop, and the occasional rock or country song. Not everything is sung in English.
