Ax-wielding man tries to break into 7-Eleven ‘games of skill’ machines in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — South Philadelphia police are searching for a suspected thief who attempted to break into two arcade machines early Monday morning.

It happened around 4 a.m. at the 7-Eleven on the 2300 block of West Passyunk Avenue

Surveillance video obtained by Action News shows a man repeatedly smashing up one machine with an ax before moving on to the next.

Although he beat her for several minutes, he couldn’t get inside either, police said.

“It’s like something out of a Friday the 13th horror movie, that’s what happened. All you do is get ready and go to work one day and all of a sudden you’re faced with people with an ax in their hands,” he told Vincent Emmanuel, who owns the store.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

The city has seen a rash of this type of crime due to the amount of money in the ATMs.

The manufacturer changed the way they build them. Newer games are now made with metal.

Emmanuel believes the thieves got away with nothing, but that’s not enough to calm him down any further.

“The whole operation takes about 2 minutes, it’s like lightning. It was planned in advance,” Emmanuel said. “You only have to get it right once. It’s about money. You can do this over and over again. You get lucky at some points and that’s what happens.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the police at 215-686-TIPS.
