Ayr Racecourse announce Gold Cup sponsorship and record prize money for September showpiece

AYR RACECOURSE has confirmed that Virgin Bet has renewed their Gold Cup sponsorship.

The prestigious race is named the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup for the third consecutive year.

The prize money on offer has also increased this year and now stands at £180,000 – confirming it as one of the most exciting sprint handicaps on the British racing calendar.

Summerghand ran well, winning last year’s extra time by a margin of 12/1, with Bielsa and Kevin Stott being comfortable winners 12 months earlier.

Having seen winners such as William Haggas, Tom Dascombe and Richard Fahey in recent years, the six furlong showdown continues to attract some of the biggest names in flat racing.

Virgin Bet will be sponsoring the entire three day festival in Ayrshire which starts on Thursday 21st September.

The betting company sponsors the big Ladies’ Day race on Friday – the Bronze Cup – as well as three on Saturday.

These include the Virgin Bet Firth of Clyde Stakes for two-year-old fillies – the only Group 3 race to be held in Scotland – the Listed Doonside Cup and the meeting’s second largest sprint handicap, the Ayr Silver Cup.

The Doonside Cup was won last year by Roger Varian’s protégé Royal Champion, who won Royal Ascot this year.
