The Arizona State Senate has opened an ethics investigation into a pro-Trump Republican who tweeted outcry comments about last weekend’s racist attack at a Buffalo supermarket. , New York, killing 10 people.
The referral of Flagstaff Senator Wendy Rogers to the Ethics Committee comes instead of the immediate deportation that Democratic lawmakers are planning, GOP Majority Leader Rick Gray said. The due process review requires no less than an ethics investigation, he said.
Despite a bipartisan vote on March 24 on Republicans’ plan to open an ethics committee review that could lead to expulsion, criticism or reprimand, Democrats were unable to make any Republican who supported the motion to deport Rogers. The state’s Democrats angrily noted that Rogers had just been censored in March for a series of repeated tweets and statements that included white nationalism and calls for violence.

The hour-long debate in the Senate, which has grown increasingly heated over what to do with Rogers, has veered off course, with Republicans accusing Democrats of creating political opportunisms and party favors. Democrats accuse GOP members of a pattern of avoiding uncomfortable discussions about race relations by shutting down any debate on the issue.

State Democrats have pointed to Rogers’ past problems, starting the month she was sworn into office in 2021 when an employee accused her of bullying and other unprofessional behavior, and censorship. March 2022, also adopted by a 24-3 vote with three members not present.
