Anyone who saw and enjoyed the original Avatar: The Last Airbender has a particular villain who is her favorite, and for many, that villain is Zuko’s sister Azula. The Fire Nation Princess was still quite intimidating today and is part of one of the best moments of the series.

It’s been a while since she’s appeared in the comics, but later this year she’ll be directing a graphic novel of her own. Azula in the spirit temple was officially unveiled last yearBut Screenrant recently announced the book’s release date of September 26th and 27th. Written by Faith Erin Hicks and drawn by Peter Wartman, it will pick up where 2016 was smoke & shadow stopped running with her after trying to make Zuko a better Firelord in her own weird way. When a mission with her followers doesn’t go as planned, Azula ends up in a forest temple inhabited by a single monk.

“What initially looks like a place where it’s safe to spend the night turns out to be something terrifyingly different,” Dark Horse’s description reads. “Forced to confront her past, Azula will finally face her chance at redemption…but will she take it?”

The Azula comic continues a trend in its own right that focuses on specific things Last Airbender Characters. Along with series writer Tim Hedrick, Hicks and Wartman previously worked on graphic novels centered on Katara, Toph Beifong, and Suki in 2020 and 2021. These were all pretty good and captured the spirit of the show pretty well, and it’s doubtful that trend will end with Azula’s. What’s interesting to see, though, is if Azula gets the redemption story some fans thought she deserved — after all, there’s no rule saying she can’t if her brother and uncle did — or if she gets it just accept that she is evil as hell and continue threatening her family.

Avatar: Azula in the Spirit Temple will be released in bookstores on September 26th and in comic shops on September 27th.
