Balenciaga Designer Demna Apologizes For Controversial Kiddie Campaign

Balenciaga’s creative director personally apologized for an ad campaign that featured children with teddy bear bags dressed in BDSM-inspired bondage gear.

“I accept my responsibility,” he wrote in a statement posted to Instagram. “It was inappropriate to have children promote objects that had nothing to do with them.”

“As much as I would like at times to be thought-provoking through my work, I would NEVER intend to do so on a subject as horrific as child abuse, which I condemn. Period,” his post continued.

On Monday, Balenciaga apologized for the campaign. The label also removed the ads from all platforms, adding that the “plush bear bags shouldn’t have been shown with children in this campaign.” The brand also stated, “All items included in this shoot were provided by third parties who have confirmed in writing that these props are counterfeit office documents. It turned out to be genuine legal paperwork, most likely from filming a television drama.”
