BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Just this week, Baltimore has seen a number of shootings – including two mass shootings in just one day.
The abuse included the murder of a pregnant woman and her fiancé.

University of Baltimore criminologist Jeffrey Ross told WJZ: “We have in the United States, along with the murder pandemic, we have a gun epidemic.
The Baltimore Police Department on Friday provided the public with a glimpse of some of the guns its officers recovered while trying to reduce crime in the city.
“These are just some of the weapons and drugs that officers have recovered over the past seven days,” authorities said in a press release.
New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a historic increase in the number of gun-related deaths in the United States.
The agency reports that gun homicides are up 35% in 2020 — the highest number ever recorded since the CDC began collecting this data in 1968.

“That might be the better gun approach,” Ross said. “People, during the last two years during the pandemic, felt that the police were not responding in time. Trust in the police has dropped. I think a lot of people [are] solve the problem in their hands. “
The CDC report shows that young black people are more likely to be victims of gun violence — especially black men.
“They also live in communities where there’s high gun violence, high poverty, so that’s why that kind of dynamic has happened,” says Ross.
It’s a tragic dynamic – one that needs to be mitigated and one that needs change wholesale, he said.
“I think the main issue is access to guns,” Ross said.

The report says states with stricter gun laws have fewer gun-related deaths.
