“We are beatbox dads and we run live music and advocacy programs for kids,” says Jamaal Collier.

Collier and Max Bent have performed as Beatbox Dads for the past seven years. They hold performances at schools, libraries, birthday parties and at events to entertain and introduce children to the joys of beatbox and hip-hop culture.

“Some of our early performances, we just did it in a community setting, and we had to really observe, as performers, that we had to observe how the music affected impact on the community,” Bent said.

The duo told WJZ that their performances, some rehearsed while others were improvised, captivated children. For some of them, beatbox shows are their first exposure to live music.

“Max and I are very passionate about creating music and we really wanted to be one of the first people that children have the opportunity to meet to discover sound, music and movement,” says Collier.

The group will begin performing at noon on Sunday at the block party.
